Newsflash

Ivor will take to the wheel of son Steven's Evo for the third time when he takes part in this year's Snowman Rally on Valentine's day.  He nearly won the event in the late 70's in white-out conditions and will again be playing for snow.

"I shouldn't really do the event but I'm not getting any younger and I'm better getting out while I'm still fit enough to enjoy it" said the Gretna man who turns 62 four days before the event.

"I'll not be taking much interest in stage times though...  These days I just enjoy competing so I'll be trying to keep Steven's car in one piece!"

THE ADVENTURE

What's all this then? We’re taking part in the world's first

What is it?It’s a massive 5000+ mile drive through some of the world’s most inhospitable terrain.

Where to?Cameroon... Every year the final destination will change but the very first Africa Rally finish party will be lubricated with Cameroonian palm wine.

When is it? It begins on July 18th 2008 and we hope to get there in under three weeks.

Where does it start?Hyde Park in London, with a massive party on the European mainland just afterwards.

How does it work? The Adventurists Rally is like a solid oak table - it is made up of four proud legs: -

1. Charity - raising huge sums of cash for awesome projects

2. Vehicles - under 1 litre and crap

3. The route - there isn't one

4. On your own - there's absolutely no back up, it interferes with our adventure like a nasty rash so there is none. These four simple ingredients make up the very G&T of adventure we’re sure you'll agree.

The mighty African adventure

Massive, ridiculously hot, covered in deserts and some of the wildest jungles in the world, vast stretches that roads that just don't reach; Africa calls the Adventurist like a siren in the night.  Come hither and do thyself a mischief, she says. How we’ll cope we don’t know.  What we do know is that if we survive these 3 weeks we’ll have a lifetime of stories to tell our grandchildren about over and over again until they fear coming to visit us in our old people's home. Teams from all over the world will gather like flies in Europe for the party to end all parties, before thundering out in different directions to all corners of the world.  The Africa Rally will launch in London, Madrid and Rome in parallel with the Mongol Rally.

Pioneering into the unknown

Do you find you wet yourself a touch with excitement at the prospect of walking off the edge of the map? Do you appreciate the opportunity to make things slightly more stupid and dangerous by being the first to try something? If you already know what you'll have for dinner for the next two weeks, this adventure is not for you.  But if your perfect day starts with another step into the unknown and a possible lunchtime appointment with total disaster, take off your shoes and make yourself at home.  The Adventurists Rally Africa will sort you right out. This adventure is basically untried, untested, and quite frankly dangerous, except we don't really know how dangerous.  Which is why it will be so excellent, just not everyone's cup of firewater.

What's in storeWe haven’t clue…and that’s the whole point.  Will we cope with the extreme heat of the Sahara or the rainy season in Burkina Faso?  Will we be held-up for days at border crossings?  Will we be held-up at gunpoint by robbers or terrorists?  Will we arrive with pieces of wood holding our car together?  Will we arrive at all? Our route will see us travel down Africa’s Western coast and through the minefields that guard the Western Saharh/Mauritinia border.  Then we’ll head inland through miles and miles of sand to Timbuktu before turning south again for Burkina Faso and Benin in the height of the rainy season. Political unrest and the risk of kidnap will greet us in Nigeria before we cross to the relative safety of Cameroon and the welcoming sight of the Southern Atlantic Ocean at our final destination of Kribi.
